Lecture 1

Overview of the Course and an

Introduction to Trial Process & Torts

The purposes of this class are to develop an understanding of our legal system generally (the laws, the courts, the lawyers) and the specifics of several areas of law, as spelled out in these slides and syllabus.

After the admin portion of the lecture, we'll look at some of the basics of defining and resolving disputes between individuals in our society. In particular, we will discuss torts (physical damage by one person to another or to property), which will be used during Lecture 2 to flesh out the abstract form of a trial.

Materials: These are the slides I will use during this first lecture. Please review Miller & Jentz, Chapter 1 (The Legal Environment) and Chapter 4 (Torts & Cyber Torts). You do not need to spend any time on the Cyber Torts -- we'll cover that in a much later class.

Be sure to review the reading and slides for Lecture 2 before you take Quiz 1, which will be available from Friday at 8:00 am until Sunday at 6:00 pm.
